Reading Work (Group Blake)

Today with my group, we learnt about human hearing and animal hearing. I our ears we have something called the Cochlea. In between the lines of the Cochlea he have what's called Cilia (Hair Cells).

 Cilia's are are very delicate and fragile. they can be damaged by having headphones on full volume or from other loud sounds. As you grow older you start to loose your Hair Cells. To prevent this from happening, you should have your headphones to the volume of medium, or anything lower and if you are doing anything that involves loud sound, than you can wear ear muffs or use something else that will help!

Bastion Point

This week my reading group have learnt about Bastion Point. For many years there was an argument between the Government and Ngāti Whātua about who owned the land. This is my DLO about what I learned.

Questions and Answers

What is Bastion Point?

Bastion Point is a section of land that the iwi, Ngati whatua, gave to the government.

Why did the British and Maori have different ideas about who owned the land?

The british wanted to buy land so that they could settle in New Zealand but they were actually buying more land than what existed in New Zealand.

Why did Ngati Whatua let the government use the land at Bastion Point?

Because the iwi (Ngati whatua) were happy to share their land with british but they did not have the same idea about the ownership.

Who burnt down the marae at Bastion Point?

The government burnt down the Bastion Point along with the houses near it. This happened in 1952 because (in the government's words) he explained that they did that because they were preparing for Queen Elizabeth’s (II) visit.

What does the word profit mean?

It means that when the government sold the gifted land he was earning money.

Do you think the police or the protesters were doing the right thing? Why?

I think the protesters were doing the right thing because they could have encouraged the government to give the land back to the Maori

What is your opinion about this issue?

My opinion is that the government should have just kept to their deal and given the land back to the Maori, but then I probably wouldn’t be here or even have or known my family especially my father, my Non, (grandma) my siblings and the rest of my family. So at a time i am also thankful that it happened.

How do you think Maori responded when asked to fight in the war?

* An old Maori warrior thought that they shouldn’t be involved in the war because in his words he said that they should let fight their own war and that it was the britishes war to fight.

Think about the date and about New Zealand’s history. How would Maori feel about fighting for the British Empire so soon after being colonised by Britain?

* I think that they would want to fight alongside the british..

Why did Rongo and Tipu want to join up?

* Rongo wanted to attack the british before they could attack the Maori.

Why did their parents have different views about whether they should?

*Because their father’s iwi supports the government and that would be good for him but

For Tipu, is it just a choice between staying with his mother or having an adventure?

* Having an adventure

Has the news from Gallipoli made his choice more complex?

* No because Big George has just died.

Why should he stay with his mother? What is his duty to her?

* Because he needs to help her with the land.

Why does the death of Big George make him want to be with his brother even more?

* I think it's because he might not want the same thing that happened to George happen to his brother Rongo.

What does the image of paddling home together in a waka mean to you? Why is this an effective metaphor?  Think of the whakatauki “He waka eke noa” (we are all in this together)

* I think it means that they are family.

What does it tell you about the brothers and their values?  Are they on their way home?

*I think they might be on their way home but i also think that they won't because they might want to fight for more wars and go adventuring.

Is this graffiti illegal?

Sometimes it is and sometimes it isn’t but only because of the dirty type of art on the wall from gangsters but in other words people can be very thoughtful into putting their effort in their art.

Can graffiti be considered art?

Yes sometimes it can and sometimes it can’t therefore graffiti can be used out to tell a story or just to do it for bad fun.

What is your opinion of graffiti?

I think that graffiti is a great type of art but it is not good to do graffiti on other people’s property or something that other people own.

What is the main message of this poem about graffiti?

The main message of this poem is to tell the stories behind the art of graffiti and what inspiring stories it has to tell.          

How did the authors of the poem and article feel about graffiti?

The authors of the poem were feeling very inspired by this sort of art-why? Because the people are upset because of our world corrupting into a very sad dangerous place.So they have graffiti to tell what they want the world to be.

What is Nuclear energy?

Nuclear power also has a lot fewer greenhouse emissions. It has been determined that the amount of greenhouse gases have decreased by almost half because of the prevalence in the utilization of nuclear power. Nuclear energy has the least effect on nature since it doesn’t discharge any gasses like methane and carbon dioxide, which are the primary “greenhouse gasses.	One of the biggest issues is environmental impact in relation to uranium. The process of mining and refining uranium hasn’t been a clean process. Actually transporting nuclear fuel to and from plants represents a pollution hazard. Also, once the fuel is used, you can’t simply take it to the landfill – it’s radioactive and dangerous.

Today I read about Piper in the sand

I feel happy about what I read today because Dougal found a pipe in the sand.

My favourite character was Dougal because he found a pipe in the sand.

I would feel happy if the same thing that happened to my character, happened to me because i would find a pipe in the sand.

I think if the author decided to write another part to this story this is what will happen Dougal would find another pipe in the sand.
